‘2 Side’ Plow

This horse drawn plow (1875-1900) is called a ‘2 Side’ plow because the farmer could flip the blade of the plow to the opposite side of the plow frame at the end of each row and plow back to the other end of the field. This was also called the ‘Hillside Plow’ because of this feature. Before the ‘2 Side’ was invented the farmer, on a hillside, would plow a furrow and then he, the plow and the horse would walk back to the beginning to start the second furrow. With the ‘2 side’ the farmer could plow back and forth, thereby plowing a field almost twice as fast. On level ground the farmer could plow around and around the field.

Plowing a field is the first operation of many that happens to a field before it can be planted.

We don’t know who made this plow but it was found in an old barn in North Harpersfield.
